The Women’s Big Bash League is Australia’s professional women’s Twenty20 competition — and, a decade after it launched, the most watched domestic women’s cricket league in the world.

What is the WBBL, and why does it matter outside Australia?

Run by Cricket Australia and contested by eight city-based franchises aligned with the men’s Big Bash clubs, it launched in 2015–16 to replace the state-based Women’s National Cricket League T20 competition.

Its significance goes well beyond Australia. Because the WBBL recruits overseas players from England, South Africa, New Zealand, the West Indies and increasingly from Asia, it gives internationals a five-week block of high-pressure T20 cricket against each other outside the international calendar. Players regularly arrive at World Cups in form because of it, and selectors across several countries now treat a strong WBBL season as a genuine selection argument.

How does the WBBL format work?

Eight teams play a regular season and the top four advance to the finals. The structure rewards finishing high: the two leading sides get a second chance if they lose their first final, while the third and fourth-placed teams are eliminated by a single defeat.

Net run rate separates teams level on points, which is why heavy wins late in the group stage often matter as much as the result itself.

How are the squads put together?

Each squad mixes Australian internationals, domestic professionals and overseas marquee signings, with limits on how many overseas players a club can field at once.

Since 2023 the league has used a player draft, which has made squad-building far more visible and given smaller clubs a route to signing high-profile internationals.

What is new in WBBL 12?

Cricket Australia has moved the competition further away from neutral venues, with three clubs playing an extra home game and matches across every state in the opening week. Prime-time coverage expands from 22 matches to 25.

Junction Oval in Melbourne takes a larger role, hosting at least six night fixtures including the opening-day double-header. The season also follows the T20 Spring Challenge, a nine-team pre-season event featuring the eight WBBL clubs plus the ACT Meteors.

Who are the defending champions?

The Hobart Hurricanes, who won their first title in WBBL 11 by beating Perth Scorchers in the final on 13 December 2025. They had never previously reached a WBBL final.

Melbourne Renegades, champions the season before that, failed to qualify for the finals in defence of their title — a reminder of how tight the league has become.

How does the WBBL fit the international calendar?

WBBL 12 begins while international cricket is still being played: Australia’s T20I series against New Zealand finishes on 22 October, and India’s ODI series against Zimbabwe runs to 28 October, one day before the opener. Overseas players therefore arrive in waves rather than all at once, and early-season squads can look different from the sides that contest the finals.

It also sits in the build-up to the next ICC cycle. With qualification for the 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup partly decided by T20I rankings, the form players carry out of a WBBL season feeds directly into national selection through the following year.
